Just want to get rid of your reliable, sensible, fun daily driver and pick up something crazy?
That's a daily thing for me. I love my E90. It's never given me trouble, I have fun taking it on backroads, it's pretty economical, and it as a lot of features I enjoy. I don't have any buyers remorse, I love this car.
But I just can't help but look at E39 M5's, E46 M3's, Honda S2000's, and other attainable cars every single day. It's so painful to find the perfect car, and then think of how you just can't buy it. I ask myself why I can't buy it, and I just blank out. I don't have a real reason other than that my car is fine and meets my needs perfectly.
With what my car is valued at, I could sell it and if I get the right price, I could buy a lower mileage (~50k) E46 M3 or a nice S2000. I could get a higher mileage E39 M5, and I will always love those. Hell, I could probably buy a mint E30 (non M3) and still have money left over. If I save a little more, I can even get a 996.
I'm probably not gonna buy something "crazy" and impractical anytime soon, but you never know... I might even surprise myself!

i don't want to give up my crazy shit for a reliable sensible fun daily driver.

If I had a car I'd say fuck yeah! Especially if I had a car that's worth around the same as a Morgan 3-Wheeler.

Don't ever let me put ideas in your head, but...

waking up early to make my stuff run better on extra cold days is worth it on days i don't have to do it. my truck chugs oil, and because of electrical gremlins i never have all of my stuff running at the same time. sometimes they team up against me.

2 wheels good!! I've always wanted to get a motorcycle.... I helped a friend rebuild an old bmw bike. In return he taught me how to ride. It was pretty simple, and my commute isn't that long so a bike would be a good choice... But "if I ever see you on a motorcycle you better bet it'll be the last thing with an engine you ever use" -Mom

I just got my mustang 6 months ago and although I love it, not a day goes by that I don't consider replacing it!

You sir.. Are living the life. I love my E90, but if I could go back I would probably slap myself in the face, tell myself to grow a pair, and buy this lemans blue E39 M5 I found with 54k miles that was owned and maintained by BMW NA for half of it's life that I found... 15 miles from me.

You should definitely get an E46 M3. Ask me how I know!

I swear.. Oppo is gonna end up talking me into selling my car and buying something crazy haha.
It'll be fun as hell though!

Talk me into buying a E46 M3... Best way to get to my brain is lots of pictures. I'd also like to hear more about your experience with it, especially if you DD it.

very much so-ish. don't get me wrong, i'm gonna be fuqqed when i'm old, but the goods are here now. i saw what i made, and i've seen what new cars cost, and i've seen what i could afford if i pawn off my junk. best bet is to keep my junk truckin' as long as it's fun. better junk is on it's way. i hope to still have the nova by the time i find a DI LT1 in a junkyard.

E39 M5 with 103k for $14.9.... If sold my car I would be able to buy this and have money left over.... I'm in a tough spot!!

Do you ever just want to get rid of your reliable, sensible, fun daily driver and pick up something crazy?
Well, yes, everyday. But that's because my reliable sensible fun DD is a mk4 Jetta. Also I'm a broke college kid so I know I can't afford any of my ideas.

They're cheaper than a car to own, they allow you to have tons of fun and "go crazy" when you want to, but they also don't take up much space and allow you to keep your practical car. Ride smart and wear your gear, you will be fine. They aren't that dangerous if you wear the gear. I agree with your mom, once you get a bike it's hard to get back into cars.
If she's paying for your transportation, then she gets a say in the matter. If not...

Can't wait to get an Elise.

Nah it's all me.. I stopped having my parents pay for my transportation as soon as I got my license. She just thinks I'll crash and die going 160mph haha. Realistically, a motorcycle would make sense in my commute. Right now, I don't think I have the experience to DD one, especially in the winter in NoVa. If I get more practice on a bike, it's gonna be really tempting to pick one up as a nice weather (not rain or snow) commuter.

Hoon it for me once you do... Those are just too impractical for me. Then again... If they dropped like $5k in price and one popped up locally... There's a chance I'd probably buy it. Doug Demuro's article taught me a lotus is a good "investment" haha!

Of course!

Simple answer.
I kind of like not dying when I temporarily misplace my sanity. It's surprisingly hard to get into real trouble with a Tercel or an Outback. Evan when I'm pulling shenanigans I know I'm probably not going to do anything besides MAYBE bruise a bit of plastic or mess up a wheel hub. Now if I had 200+ horsepower and something that didn't understeer like a tricycle going down a bowling lane, I might get into some real trouble. Abandoned parking lot or no.

It's in blue too.... damn, you've certainly screwed yourself over.

Consider a CRF250L. It probably only goes 90, but it's a forgiving bike that's fun to ride and you can take it anywhere- even in snow. It's a great beginner bike, and it does have enough power to kill you but you really have to try.

Doug speaks the truth (as long as you don't wreck it) I just found one for 28. Pretty pretty pretty good.

A cheaper option to this is the Honda Grom. Don't know what your commute is like
![]() 02/03/2014 at 22:18 |

Yes. But I'm a graduate student so I can't afford it
So what I did was make my reliable dd into something batshit crazy.
A sedate 2007 Saab 9-3 Aero convertible with a quiet turbo V6 (250 hp/ 258 tq)
Now it's a 320 hp/ 410 tq of torque steering fury of trolls.
Check.

I don't daily drive it. I do drive whenever it's not raining or snowing though. Main reason is laziness. My M3 gets a spot in the garage, while my other car is stuck outside. By driving it in fair weather only, I only have to wash it every 6 weeks or so. My other car hardly ever gets washed because I know its going to be raining next time I drive it.
Anyway its a great car, I've only had a couple issues with it (SMG slave cylinder, and a leaking power steering hose). The only car I would consider replacing it with would be an E90 M3, or the new M3 coming out. The E90/92 M3 has proven to be more reliable than E46's. It's a little bigger than I like but the extra doors would come in handy. To sum it up the E46 is a phenominal trackday performer that you can live with everyday.

I'm familiar with Groms! I actually had a ruckus that I was gonna do an engine swap with, but I sold it to my neighbor who was in love with Ruckus'.

I'm gonna start looking around at those. I have the space to store a bike right now, and that looks like I can have some low speed fun. I would really enjoy riding one of these in the summer. Thanks for all the help man, I appreciate it!
![]() 02/03/2014 at 22:26 |

I was mainly looking into 6MT's because of how problematic the SMG's are said to be, but if I went with both my options would be so much larger. And I would love an E90 M3, but those are still a little out of my price range haha.. But yeah, I like how you said that. "Track performer you could live with everyday." It would be spending much more time being an "everyday" car, but I still think I would enjoy it.

320 hp saab convertible? I think that's a perfect Car.

Nope. DD a miata in the summer so nope.

I would get a 6mt over an SMG now. At the time I was living in Atlanta and commuting in lots of traffic. It was nice being able to put it in auto mode, but now I only drive 9 miles to work so a manual would be better. An M3 might be overkill for a daily driver only car. Its almost impossible to experience it fully on the street. It likes to be wound out and it begs you too (just like a sport bike). If I didn't track it every once in a while I dont know if I could restrain myself on the street like it do.

You're a lucky guy haha.
![]() 02/03/2014 at 22:46 |

I regularly auto cross and hit up secluded back roads, but that still isn't the same as tracking it. Ultimately that's another reason why I haven't already boughten an M3.
![]() 02/03/2014 at 22:54 |

I think so too. The torque curve is so flat. It simply pulls. 40-100 mph has never happened so quickly.
And the best part? It probably could put some hurt on the coyotes and the lsx in terms of highway pulls.

DO IT! DO IT!
You only live once. As far as I know...

Do you have 325i or 335i now?
![]() 02/04/2014 at 00:19 |

Yes. Life is too short to drive a boring car.

I did it. I'm DDing an e46 M3 nowadays. It was a good decision.

328i

Can you elaborate?
![]() 02/04/2014 at 09:25 |

OK, I was going to say if you had a 335i and went to an E46 you might miss that instant torque.

Happy to. I had an old e39 that I loved dearly. I kind of ruined it with coilovers and put over 200k on it, so I started having some problems and it was time to get rid of it. I figured I should probably buy another e39, but I figured what the hell, and started looking at e39 M5s and e46 M3s. After a very long search, I found a really minty one. 60k, bone stock, perfect except for a dent on the bumper, 18 grand. So I bought it, got some tickets, and it's awesome.
